Low-E Glass Coating Removal Wheel for Insulating Glass

Low-E glass typically costs more to purchase and install than standard glass. Soft-coat Low-E is delicate and must be enclosed within an insulated glass unit. A subtle tint may be visible from some viewing angles, and incorrect grade selection can cause excess indoor heat gain in hot climates.

There are two main coating types: soft coat, made with ultra-thin silver layers paired with metal oxide protective films; and hard coat, made with a robust fluorine-doped tin oxide coating.

For double-pane glass, a flame test may show one of the four flame reflections as bluish or purplish when Low-E coating is present. You can also check official energy-rating labels and product specifications, or use a professional coating detector.

Low-E glass appears almost identical to clear glass under normal viewing conditions. Multi-silver soft-coat Low-E may show faint blue, grey or green reflections at specific angles.
